Why being a bad mom was one of my best decisions ever…

May 19, 2010

Tuesday May 18th, 2010 was the official “ditch day” for my oldest son and I.  I pulled him out of school at 11 for a doctors appointment, but after it got over at noon I didn’t rush him back to school.  Instead I surprised him with ditch day.  We took the rest of the day off to play.  First was lunch on the patio at Dante’s Pizzeria – it happened to be 70-some degrees out and absolutely gorgeous.  I forget how nice it is to sit and talk with Kobe and hear about his life from him.  Then we headed to Boulder Creek for a little mini golf and batting cages.  I hate mini golf – in fact it’s one of the biggest sacrifices I make as a mom for my kids.  They love it – so I do it.  (And you would be shocked as to how many adults there were out playing putt putt today – during the day!)

After Boulder Creek we swung by the dollar theater.  I remember this place as the coolest place ever when I was young with that trippy long hallway of flashing lights – this time around I just was hoping not to catch a disease there and wondering if the concessions had become self serve as I waited for someone to hook me up with Diet Coke and gummy bears.  The good news however is that we saw Avatar which turned out to be an awesome movie!

A quick drop into Krypton Comics, (I don’t know why – it was there and it seemed like a good idea) – did you know there is such a thing as Star Trek cologne? – and then we headed home.

Now I know I am setting my self up for all sorts of criticism from all three of you that read this blog by telling you about ditch day.  But I have to be honest – I’m ready to defend it.  Twenty years from now it will not matter that Kobe missed half a day of class where they had a sub as a teacher, but it will matter that he has the memories from this day.  That he will know that no matter how busy and hectic life is that he and his brother and sister are still my number one priority.  Our life is insane – I work multiple jobs, my husband works full time, we have football, baseball, dance class and soccer.  We are running in a hundred directions all the time – and so today I decided to take a few hours just for us. And it was one of the best days I’ve had in a long long time.

Good for you two! He will always remember his “ditch day”. Every child needs to spend some one-on-one time with mom.
